Campus-wide inventory and disposal of controlled substances
This message is for all faculty and research lab personnel with "controlled substances" in their labs.
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) performs routine disposal of biomedical, radiological and chemical wastes on behalf of the university. During several recent routine waste disposal operations, OEHS has found several specialized use and possession substances all needing to be properly disposed of. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (“DEA”) refers to these materials as “controlled substances,” and severely restricts how they are obtained, used, stored and disposed of.
At this time, OEHS is requesting all laboratories to inventory these types of substances. In addition, they have received a number of disposal requests for these substances, and would like to implement a campus-wide waste disposal program for these substances. Any labs in need of disposal of controlled substances are requested to supply information to OEHS to assist with plans for this effort. Information on inventories and disposal are needed by Oct. 15, 2010.
