Area of Interest
Synthesis and characterization of discrete nanoparticles of phosphides and chalcogenides and determination of how size and structure impact resultant magnetic, electronic and optical properties.

Surface modification of nanoparticles for use in drug-delivery or biological imaging.

Sol-gel assembly of nanoparticles into porous architectures (gels and aerogels) and application of these materials for photovoltaics and sensing.

Generation of nanoconstructs on surfaces by nucleating organic crystals at nanoparticle surfaces and by reductive transformation of nanowires/tubes into 1-D patterns of nanoparticles. Coupling magnetic properties with semiconducting properties in the bulk and on the nanoscale.

Resources
Thermal Gravimetric Analyzer with reducing atmosphere capabilities, Surface Area Analyzer/Porosimeter, Fluorimeter, CO2 Critical Point Dryer, furnaces with capabilities to 1200 °C, inert atmosphere glove boxes and Schlenk lines for air-sensitive syntheses.

Collaboration Interests:
We seek collaborators with expertise in catalyst evaluation, device preparation and testing, and interest in exploiting nanoparticles for biological function.
