Welcome to NAPHIIn June 2005 representatives from Wayne State University and the University of Windsor began exploring a collaborative program of international public health research and education that would focus on urban health problems such as those found in Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. The collaboration would provide an opportunity for comparative research into public health outcomes between countries that have very different healthcare delivery systems and public health policies, in the context of two cities with similar exposure and demographic factors. The collaboration would build on the existing public health research activities at both universities. Wayne State University and the University of Windsor have since hosted a series of meetings for researchers, educators and administrators from both universities to promote interactions among faculty who have an interest in public health research. More than 90 WSU faculty members and 45 from the University of Windsor have participated in these meetings. Several research groups have formed as a result of these meetings, on topics that include childhood obesity, infectious disease, gambling, and women and violence. In addition to their shared research interests faculty members from the University of Windsor and Wayne State University are jointly developing a curriculum and other educational opportunities to be included in Wayne State's new Master of Public Health program. The North American Public Health Institute has active support from administration at both Universities, who are committed to moving this research program forward.
