Geospatial Determinants of Health Outcomes Consortium (GeoDHOC) This study will relate asthma to land use in selected neighborhoods in Windsor and Detroit. The project, which uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, will demonstrate the use of analytical and visualization software programs for public health studies. The research group includes faculty from Environmental Science, Family Medicine, Nursing, Geology, Mathematics, and Epidemiology. Gambling This research group has several areas of interest including: studying gambling addiction in older adults; determining the reliability of self-reporting; comparing the self exclusion programs in Detroit and Windsor casinos; studying casino employees who require treatment for gambling addiction; studying treatment acceptance by race, ethnicity, age, and gender. The research group includes faculty from Psychiatry, Psychology and Social Work. Vaccination of Healthcare Providers This study will compare the influenza vaccination rates for healthcare providers in Windsor and Detroit, and design and test a program in both cities to increase their vaccination rates. Early data comparisons find that Detroit hospitals have lower healthcare provider vaccination rates than those in Windsor. This research group includes faculty from Infectious Disease, Nursing, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Epidemiology, and Art. Women and Violence This research group has several areas of interest including: translating research into intervention programs, examining the impact of domestic violence services that are available from non-domestic violence service agencies in Windsor and Detroit; examining violence against women employees in a healthcare setting. The research group includes faculty from Psychology, Occupational Health, and Social Work. Obesity among School Aged Children This research group will assess system factors that may influence the dramatically growing and significant public health problem of childhood obesity in Canada and the United States. The study aims include identifying education system factors in Canada and the United States that may influence childhood obesity rates, and exploring differences in the education systems of Canada and the United States to gain insight into possible areas for intervention and prevention in the two countries. The research group includes faculty from Nursing, Pediatrics, Epidemiology and Family Medicine. INPHAASE INPHAASE is an inter-institutional collaboration devoted to understanding the biological and social bases for health disparities among populations of differing demographics in order to overcome the reason for these disparities, and to developing health and information management systems to provide outstanding health care in the most cost effective ways. INPHAASE focuses research on public health and chronic disease. INPHAASE research has included studies of tobacco use and exposure, obesity, population health, adolescent alcohol use, and hypertension. The researchers include faculty from more than a dozen disciplines. Homelessness Homelessness is a public health problem. This group looks at health outcomes for homeless youth who “age out” of the foster care system. The group includes faculty members from Psychology and Nursing. Public Health Law This group proposes to compare the Canadian and US systems of health care delivery. The group includes faculty members from Law. Modeling Urban Behavior This group will develop a model of urban health- related behaviors to use for predicting health outcomes. The group includes members from Computer Science and Family Medicine.
