Wayne State to host Marqueta C. Huyck Lecture in Nutrition, focused on benefits of functional foods

The Department of Nutrition and Food Science in Wayne State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites the public to the 2012 Marqueta C. Huyck Lecture in Nutrition on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bernath Auditorium in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library.

The lecture, "Fictional or functional? Are there benefits to using functional foods?" will feature two distinguished speakers:

  • Geoffrey A. Cordell, Ph.D., professor emeritus of pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago. Cordell will present “New Strategies in Traditional Medicine,” in which he will describe his research efforts to develop natural product research programs and strategies that aim to enhance the availability of safe, efficacious and reproducible plant-based medicinal agents through medicinal plant quality control.
  • John W. Finley, Ph.D., chair and professor of food science, Louisiana State University. Finley will present “Berries, the Micro-biome and Inflammation,” in which he will discuss the health benefits of berry anthocyanins – a pomace by-product that is left over during fruit juice processing and is often underused – including for prevention of inflammation in cardiovascular tissue and more.

In addition, Wayne State professors will present the benefits of various foods and natural products on health. Joseph Artiss, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology in the School of Medicine, and Catherine Jen, Ph.D. professor and chair of nutrition and food science, will discuss their research focused on obesity and diabetes prevention and treatment, and Alpha-Cyclodextrin, a novel, patented dietary fiber aimed at combatting obesity.

Smiti Gupta, Ph.D., assistant professor of nutrition and food science, will discuss the effects of curcumin on lung cancer. Kequen Zhou, Ph.D., assistant professor of nutrition and food science, will discuss how grape skin extract can benefit diabetes prevention and treatment.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
