Wayne State University professor honored for commitment to multiple sclerosis research

DETROIT— The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers has honored a Wayne State University professor and department chair for his lifetime of commitment and research to combat the condition.

The consortium presented Robert Lisak, M.D., chair of the Department of Neurology and resident of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., with its Lifetime Achievement Award during its recent annual meeting in Montreal.

"Bob Lisak is someone who cares," said Corey Ford, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurology, assistant dean for research and medical director of the pharmacy department at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, and former president of the consortium. "He cares about his institution, serving as Parker Webber Chair in Neurology, chair and professor of neurology and professor of immunology and microbiology at Wayne State University, neurologist-in-chief of the Detroit Medical Center and chief of neurology at Harper University Hospital. He cares about his research and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scholarly articles, and he has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation and many others."

The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers is a professional organization of MS health care providers and researchers in North America. It seeks to increase the ability of those professionals to impact the care of MS sufferers and improve their quality of life. The consortium also is an international clearinghouse for research results, the latest treatments, clinical trials and patient education programs.

"This a great honor for me, recognizing my contributions and leadership in research, clinical care, teaching and mentoring as well as service to the scientific, clinical and patient organizations beginning at the National Institutes of Health 45 years ago," said Lisak, the consortium's research director and newly elected secretary. "But it also reflects the support of my family and the support and collaboration from colleagues at the NIH, the University of Pennsylvania and, for the last 24 years, Wayne State University."

Lisak has served in leadership positions and on committees of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association, the International Society of Neuroimmunology, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Guillain Barré Syndrome/CIDP Foundation and the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America. He also has been editor of the Journal of the Neurological Sciences, the journal of the World Federation of Neurology.
