Respiratory Protection - Fit Testing
Wayne State University will fit test employees at the following times with the same make, model, style, and size of respirator that will be used:
- Before any of our employees are required to use any respirator with a negative or positive pressure tight-fitting facepiece
- Whenever a different respirator facepiece (size, style, model, or make) is used
- At least annually
- Whenever the employee reports, or OEH&S, the PLHCP, employee's supervisor, or Program Administrator makes visual observations of changes in the employee's physical condition that could affect respirator fit. Such conditions include, but are not limited to, facial scarring, dental changes, cosmetic surgery, or an obvious change in body weight
- When the employee, subsequently after passing a qualitative or quantitative fit test, notifies the OEH&S, Program Administrator, supervisor, or the PLHCP that the fit of the respirator is unacceptable. That employee will be retested with a different respirator facepiece.
NOTE: Fit tests are REQUIRED for mandatory respirator use. Fit tests are not required for voluntary respirator use, but OEHS will provide a fit test if the proper fit test equipment is available.
N95 FFR users need to bring a mask of the model type and size that they intend to use.
WSU uses TSI PORTACOUNT quantitative fit testing procedures.
To schedule a respirator fit test, call OEH&S at 313-577-1200.
