Non-Ionizing Radiation (Lasers, MRIs)

Lasers emit non-ionizing radiation and can injure someone more than a mile away if the hazard is not controlled. The purpose of WSU's Laser Safety Program is to protect laser users and others who may be exposed to potentially harmful laser radiation.

WSU's Laser Safety Committee works with laser users to address real-world safety concerns and to maintain a user-friendly, effective laser safety program.

Program objectives:

  1. All Class 3b and 4 lasers must be registered with OEHS: Laser Registration Form

  2. Standard Operating Procedures are required for Class 3b and 4 lasers: Laser SOP Template

  3. Open beam laser users must obtain and use proper protective eyewear!

  4. All users must complete basic and specific Laser Safety Training through the CITI Program site
