Dr. Smith’s research focuses on policing, including evaluations of police initiatives, studies of citizens’ attitudes toward the police, police use of force, police-minority relations and police brutality. One major strand of my work focuses on relations between police and residents of impoverished racial/ethnic neighborhoods, with an emphasis on the social-psychological dynamics of police citizen interactions and resulting violence. In recent years I’ve partnered with the Detroit Police Department and am currently preparing to evaluate the introduction of body worn cameras in the city.
