Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Faculty Scholar Award (winter)
Notify CHR of intent to submit: October 1, 2005
Deadline: November 1, 2005
Maximum Award: $15,000

The 2006 DMC Faculty Scholar Award Program will fund studies that focus on translating WSU faculty research into studies of clinical practice at the DMC. Both need-based and hypothesis-testing proposals are of interest. Three to five faculty teams, each of which is composed of one Research Faculty Scholar and one Clinical Faculty Scholar, will be funded. The Clinical Faculty Scholar must be a CON faculty. The Research Faculty Scholar may be from a WSU Department other than Nursing. Faculty Scholar teams will be assisted in finding a required co-investigator from the DMC Department of Nursing. Proposals will be judged on a number of factors in addition to scientific merit including (a) innovativeness, (b) impact on DMC nursing practice, and (c) likelihood of research leading to major external funding.

Research Mentors Program for New Faculty
Maximum Award: $2,000

The funds in this program are used to encourage a productive mentoring relationship between tenured faculty with strong research records and success in obtaining extramural research funding and newly recruited junior faculty. This yearlong mentorship is meant to provide guidance to junior faculty in all aspects of research program development, focusing on external funding opportunities. Mentoring activities include career development, guidance in establishing an independent research program, critique of manuscripts and grant proposals/applications, development of collaborative research opportunities and guidance in participation in national activities, such as peer reviews and professional meetings. All new tenure-track faculty in their first two years at WSU are eligible for a senior faculty mentor.

Submit nominations for senior mentors in memo format, addressed to Gloria Heppner, Associate Vice President for Research, with signature approvals from the appropriate chairperson and dean. Memos should be delivered to 5057 Woodward, Suite 6200, faxed to 577-3626 or e-mailed to heppnerg@karmanos.org and should include a brief summary of mentoring activities. Payment to the mentor’s account is made upon verification of application for external funding by the junior faculty member (a copy of the cover page of the submitted proposal is sufficient). If you need additional information, please e-mail sjames@wayne.edu or call 577-8997.
