The Nathan Cummings Foundation
Scope: The Nathan Cummings Foundation is rooted in the Jewish tradition and committed to democratic values and social justice, including fairness, diversity and community. Core programs include arts and culture; the environment; health; inter-program initiatives for social and economic justice; and the Jewish life and values/contemplative practice programs.
Deadline: The foundation approves most grants during two board meetings, in the spring and fall. All grant inquiries are acknowledged promptly.
Funds: Vary by project. For 2002, the foundation’s total grant budget was more than $20,000,000, of which $17,125,000 was for its core program areas.
Eligibility: The foundation seeks to work with partners in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Goals and objectives vary by program. Consult the Web site for complete guidelines.

Educational Foundation of America
Eligibility: U.S. nonprofits.
Funding: Grants generally range from $10,000 to $50,000.
Priorities: Its areas of interest include education, the environment, crisis of human overpopulation and reproductive freedom, Native American issues, arts education, medicine, and human services.
Comments: EFA provides grants for specific projects and start-up needs. But it won’t consider requests for building and capital projects, endowment funds, religious purposes, annual fundraising campaigns, indirect costs, overhead expenses, or general support. Important characteristics for grantees include your record of achievement, intended broad impact, sound financial practices, increasing independence, and ability to correspond with EFA’s objectives.
Deadlines: Send letters of inquiry at any time. To reduce paper consumption, EFA requires that all inquiries be submitted by email, using the EFA form. The form is located at http://www.efaw.org/Inquiry%20Guidelines.htm.
