Department of Mathematics: Annual Owen G. Owens Lecture
The Mathematics Department sponsors an annual Owen G. Owens Lecture. A short biography of Professor Owens and information on this lecture series may be found at http://www.math.wayne.edu/~lowell/owens_bio.htm and http://www.math.wayne.edu/~lowell/1992-2005%20Owens_Lecturers.htm .
This lecture deals with the issue of computer-assisted mathematical proofs. http://www.math.binghamton.edu/zaslav/Nytimes/+Science/+Math/sphere-packing.20040406.html is a 2004 New York Times article that explains this issue in the context of the proof of the Kepler Conjecture by this year’s lecturer, Dr. Thomas Hales.
The lecture will take place on February 20 at 3:00 p.m. in the Bernath Auditorium of the Adamany Undergraduate Library.
