William Randolph Hearst Foundations
Scope: The Hearst Foundation Inc. and the Randolph Hearst Foundation are independent private philanthropies operating separately from The Hearst Corporation. The charitable goals of the two foundations are essentially the same and reflect the philanthropic interests of William Randolph Hearst—education, health, social service and culture. The foundations assist organizations in providing opportunities to underserved and underrepresented populations within these four areas of interest.
Deadline: There are no deadlines and proposals are accepted year-round.
Funds: In 2005, grants averaged $75,000- $100,000.
Eligibility: The foundations do not have application forms. Submit one complete proposal according to the guidelines and procedures within your area of interest. Grants are not considered for individuals; loans and program- related investments; multiyear grants; start-up or seed funding; equipment of any kind, including computers and transportation; publishing projects; radio, film, television or other media- related projects; conferences, workshops or seminars; public policy research; or special events, tickets, tables or advertising for fund- raising events.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
Eligibility: U.S. or international nonprofits.
Funding: About $181 million.
Priorities: Giving categories include Higher Education & Scholarships (research universities, liberal arts colleges, scholarly communications, undergraduate fellows, historically Black colleges, teaching and technology, and research); Museums & Art Conservation; Performing Arts; Conservation & the Environment; Population; and Public Affairs.
Comments: This funder likes to strengthen nonprofits’ capacity and stick with grantees long enough to achieve meaningful results. Recent endowment grants include $1.7 million to Art Institute of Chicago, $1.6 million to Cleveland Museum of Art, $2.1 million to Harvard University’s Weissman Preservation Center and $2.5 million to Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
Deadlines: None. Send letters of inquiry anytime for trustee meetings in March, June, September and December.
