OVPR Hosts Intensive Grant Writing Workshop

The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to offer an intensive Grant-Writing Workshop led by Dr. Stephen Russell of Grant Writers’ Seminars and Workshops, LLC. This workshop guides a maximum of 30 selected faculty through the writing of each section of his/her own NIH or NSF grant proposal over the course of five months from the idea stage to the fully written proposal, including assisting faculty in selecting the appropriate funding mechanism, using Drs. Russell and Morrison’s “The Grant Application Writer’s Workbook.”

The workshop consists of one grant writing seminar (August 10, 2006), one on-site group meeting with Dr. Russell (October 19, 2006), one individual meeting (October 19 or 20, 2006), and e-mail correspondence with Dr. Russell and WSU’s workshop coordinator.

Participants are expected to meet established deadlines and dedicate time daily to working on his/her proposal. Participants are required to submit a federal grant application, reviewed fully by Dr. Russell and a pre-submission review committee of his/her colleagues, at the completion of the workshop. The Office of the Vice President will monitor participants’ progress throughout the workshop.

I. APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility is limited to full-time faculty have participated in Dr. Russell’s Write Winning Grants seminar on August 10, 2006 or previous seminars with Dr. Russell, who will be writing an NIH or NSF grant proposal with a February 2007 (or later) submission deadline, and who have significant time available during the workshop time frame in order to work daily on his/her proposal.

Applicants and their chairs and associate deans/directors must have read and agreed to the requirements of the workshop as outlined in the agreement that follows. Selected participants must attend the on-site workshop on October 30, 2006 and an individual consultation, on October 30 or October 31, 2006.

Note: If writing an R01, solid preliminary data must already have been collected. If writing a resubmission, the previous submission must not have been triaged and reviews must have been received by the time the workshop begins.

II. SELECTION PROCESS
Attendees of the August 10, 2006 seminar will receive a form at the seminar to indicate interest in the workshop. Those who express an interest will receive an application for candidacy electronically. After submitting a completed application, applicants will receive special instructions pertinent to the granting agency and granting mechanism each has chosen to target/use.

Applicants will then use the Workbook (distributed at the seminar) and the special instructions to write a two-page pre-proposal. Dr. Russell and the Office of the Vice President for Research will evaluate applications and select participants. Participant selection will be announced by October 6, 2006.

III. WORKSHOP COST
The Office of the Vice President for Research will cover the cost of the workshop for each participant; however, as OVPR is investing a significant amount for each participant, is it is imperative that an application for external grant support be submitted at the completion of the workshop. If a completed grant application is not submitted at the end of the workshop, the faculty member’s college and department will be responsible for paying the fee of $3200 per participant.
