Coexistence International Networking Initiative
Deadline: October 31, 2006
Coexistence International at Brandeis University (http://www.brandeis.edu/coexistence/) envisions a world where diversity is embraced for its positive potential, respect for persons is a core value, interdependence between different groups is recognized, equality is actively pursued, and the use of weapons to address conflicts is increasingly obsolete.
CI is inviting proposals, under a competitive Request for Proposal process, for a project that encourages a more collaborative approach to strengthening intergroup relations. This can either be a project that seeks to strengthen collaborations within the coexistence field (between local, regional, and international actors) or a project that seeks to strengthen collaborations between the coexistence field and institutions and practitioners working in areas related to coexistence, such as human rights, development, democratization, cultural work, etc.
CI seeks to partner with local NGOs, international NGOs, or university-based programs already at work—within one area of a country or at the national level or in a particular geographic region—on strengthening intergroup relations. These organizations might situate themselves in the fields of coexistence, peace-building, human rights, development, or gender, among others.
Expected outcomes of the regional program are likely to include the emergence of a new leadership cadre committed to a collaborative approach to coexistence, the integration of coexistence values to other areas of work, a new in-country coexistence network, and a series of publications.
CI will support one project that encourages a more collaborative approach to strengthening intergroup relations. Applications will be considered from organizations based in the following countries: Peru; El Salvador; Mexico; Brazil; Nigeria; Rwanda; the countries of West Africa; India; Australia/Oceania; Armenia; Azerbaijan; countries in Europe facing issues of Muslim-non-Muslim relations and/or questions of immigrant and non-immigrant communities; and the United States.
The applicant organization must be one that seeks to improve the quality of intergroup relations by focusing specifically on coexistence issues, or on human rights, humanitarian assistance, development, gender issues, refugee resettlement, cultural work, or some other related field.
This RFP is for a one-time, eighteen-month initiative. Up to $35,000 is budgeted for the initiative, with disbursements tied to programmatic benchmarks. Funds can be used for a range of activities, including networking activities, meetings, documentation, and communications, among others.
Visit the CI Web site, for complete program information and complete application guidelines.

Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership
Intellectual Exchange Program Grants
Deadline: December 1, 2006
The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (http://www.cgp.org/) is a grantmaking organization founded in 1991 to promote mutual understanding between the United States and Japan on contemporary social issues.
CGP is accepting applications for the following programs:
The Intellectual Exchange Program supports U.S.-Japan collaborative projects from universities and research institutions that encourage policy-oriented research and dialogue on global issues of common concern. Particular consideration is given to projects that bring together scholars, practitioners, and policy makers from the U.S. and Japan, in addition to their counterparts from other countries. Through these activities, CGP aims to create new networks and provide opportunities for advancing research and candid discussion that lead to a more informed society. The program seeks projects focused on contemporary social issues, including international economic relations, international security, sustainable development, civil society, and healthcare and aging.
The Grassroots Exchange Program supports the exploration of common social issues through exchange of expertise and collaborative action among practitioners, researchers, and committed members of the general public in the U.S. and Japan. Through U.S.-Japan grassroots exchange projects, CGP envisions project participants bringing about positive changes in the activities of their organizations and beyond, further developing and strengthening their networks, and enhancing understanding between citizens of both countries.
The Education Program supports activities that foster understanding and awareness of Japan in the U.S. and of the U.S. in Japan at the K-12 level. By targeting the student and teacher community, CGP hopes to provide a foundation for deeper mutual understanding, to build a stronger U.S.-Japan relationship, and to nurture a global outlook and active interest in world affairs. Education projects may pursue various objectives, such as developing teaching materials, enhancing teachers’ content knowledge about Japan, and creating innovative learning opportunities for students.
Prospective applicants are encouraged, prior to the submission of a formal application, to contact CGP staff and submit concept papers (three to five pages) to determine whether projects fall within CGP’s program guidelines and priorities.
Visit the CGP Web site for complete program guidelines and application requirements, as well as examples of recently funded projects.
