Internal Deadlines: Programs with Limited Numbers of Submissions

Due to a limit on the number of submissions that Wayne State University may make, the Office of the Vice President for Research is requesting that faculty interested in the following programs submit to an internal competition:

National Science Foundation
CISE Pathways to Revitalized undergraduate Computing Education (CPATH)
Internal Deadline: November 17, 2006
Program Deadline: January 23, 2007

Computing has permeated and in many cases transformed almost all aspects of our everyday lives. As computing becomes more important in all sectors of society, so does the preparation of a globally competitive U.S. workforce with knowledge and understanding of critical computing concepts, methodologies, and techniques. Unfortunately, despite the deep and pervasive impact of computing and the creative efforts of individuals in a small number of institutions, undergraduate computing education today often looks much as it did several decades ago.

Through the CISE Pathways to Revitalized Undergraduate Computing Education (CPATH) program, NSF’s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) is challenging its partners – colleges, universities and other stakeholders committed to advancing the field of computing and its impact - to transform undergraduate computing education on a national scale, to meet the challenges and opportunities of a world where computing is essential to U.S. leadership and economic competitiveness across all sectors of society.

CPATH will support four types of projects:

- Community Building (CB) Grants;
- Evaluation, Adoption, and Extension (EAE) Grants;
- Transformation (T) Grants; and
- CISE Distinguished Education Fellow (CDEF) Grants.

Wayne State University may submit up to one application for an EAE grant, and one application for a T grant. Because of the restriction, OVPR must conduct an internal competition in order not to exceed the number of applications the University may submit. (There is no restriction on the number of CB or CDEF grants to which we may apply.)

Investigators interested in competing in this year’s MRI program submit the following materials:

- A two-page summary of the instruments to be developed or acquired, and their role in the University’s research, research training, and integrated research/education activities. Please indicate in the first paragraph of your summary whether your proposal is for instrument acquisition or for instrument development.

- Contact information, including the PI’s full name, email, and phone number, and a clear indication of whether the PI is seeking approval for the T or EAE grant.

- Sign-offs from the appropriate department chair.

These materials should be submitted to OVPR, 5057 Woodward, Room 6405.3, no later than noon of November 17, 2006. The selection of Wayne State University’s nominees will be made shortly thereafter. Applicants will submit a full proposal and application only if they are chosen by the internal committee.

Each award will be made for up to $50,000 per year, total costs, for a four-year period.

Wayne State University may submit up to one application to the foundation. Because of the restriction, OVPR must conduct an internal competition in order not to exceed the number of applications the University may submit.

Investigators interested in competing in this year’s program should submit the following materials:

-A brief description of the investigator’s research intentions and interests under the period of the program;

- A copy of the investigator’s CV, including current contact information (phone number and email address); and

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation
Clinical Investigator Award
Internal Deadline: January 5, 2007

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Clinical Investigator Award provides financial support for junior faculty and an allowance for research costs, for young physicians willing to devote their careers to the development and application of new diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies for cancer and cancer prevention through clinical investigation. In addition, the Foundation will retire up to $100,000 of any medical school debt owed by the awardee.

Wayne State University may nominate two individuals to the foundation. Because of the restriction, OVPR must conduct an internal competition in order not to exceed the number of applications the University may submit.
