Internal Deadlines: Programs with Limited Numbers of Submissions

Due to a limit on the number of submissions that Wayne State University may make, the Office of the Vice President for Research is requesting that faculty interested in the following programs submit to an internal competition:

The Ellison Medical Foundation
New Scholar Award in Aging for 2007
Internal Deadline: January 5, 2007

The Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholar Award in Aging for 2007 supprots basic biological research on aging relevant to understanding aging processes and age-related diseases and disabilities. Eligible candidates are new independent investigators of outstanding promise in basic biomeidcal research relevant to aging. The award is intended to provide new faculty with support during the especially critical first three years of their independent research career. Each award will be made for up to $50,000 per year, total costs, for a four-year period.

Wayne State University may submit up to one application to the foundation. Because of the restriction, OVPR must conduct an internal competition in order not to exceed the number of applications the University may submit.

Investigators interested in competing in this year’s program should submit the following materials:

-A brief description of the investigator’s research intentions and interests under the period of the program;

- A copy of the investigator’s CV, including current contact information (phone number and email address); and

-A recommendation from the investigator’s department chair.

These materials should be submitted to OVPR, 5057 Woodward, Room 6405.3, no later than noon of January 5, 2007. The selection of Wayne State University’s nominees will be made shortly thereafter. Applicants will submit a full proposal and application only if they are chosen by the internal committee.

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation
Clinical Investigator Award
Internal Deadline: January 5, 2007

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Clinical Investigator Award provides financial support for junior faculty and an allowance for research costs, for young physicians willing to devote their careers to the development and application of new diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies for cancer and cancer prevention through clinical investigation. In addition, the Foundation will retire up to $100,000 of any medical school debt owed by the awardee.

Wayne State University may nominate two individuals to the foundation. Because of the restriction, OVPR must conduct an internal competition in order not to exceed the number of applications the University may submit.

Investigators interested in competing in this year’s program should submit the following materials:

-A brief description of the investigator’s research intentions and interests under the period of the program;

-A recommendation from the investigator’s department chair.

These materials should be submitted to OVPR, 5057 Woodward, Room 6405.3, no later than noon of January 5, 2006. The selection of Wayne State University’s nominees will be made shortly thereafter. Applicants will submit a full proposal and application only if they are chosen by the internal committee.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
Clinical Scientist Development Award
Internal Deadline: January 8, 2007
Program Deadline: March 6, 2007

The Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award provides grants to junior physician-scientists to facilitate their transition to independent clinical research careers.

The transition to an independent research career is often more difficult for physician-scientists conducting clinical research than it is for other researchers, as these individuals must balance both the demands of seeing patients with those of conducting research. The Medical Research Program created the Clinical Scientist Development Award to provide support to physician-scientists during this critical stage of career development.

From 1998 to 2006, 105 awards totaling more than $47 million were granted to junior physician-scientists working in four disease areas—AIDS, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and sickle cell anemia and other blood disorders.

It is likely that the foundation will award at least 17 three-year grants in 2007 of $125,000 per year in direct costs and $10,000 per year in indirect costs to junior faculty level physician-scientists conducting clinical research in any disease area.

Wayne State University may submit up to three applications to the agency for this particular program. Investigators interested in competing should submit the following materials:

- A two-page summary of the activities to be undertaken during the program period.

- Contact information, including the PI’s full name, email, and phone number.

- Sign-offs from the appropriate department chair.

These materials should be submitted to OVPR, 5057 Woodward, Room 6405.3, no later than noon of January 8, 2007. The selection of Wayne State University’s nominees will be made shortly thereafter. Applicants will submit a full proposal and application only if they are chosen by the internal committee.
