OVPR Announces Internal Funding Opportunity for Nanomaterials and Materials Science

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Institute for Manufacturing Research announces funding opportunities focused on nanomaterials and materials sciences. They are calling for applications for funding in two programs:

1. Preliminary Research Support: $600,000 will be awarded in research awards for starting or enhancing research programs focused on the synthesis, characterization or uses of nanomaterials. These awards are intended to provide funding to obtain preliminary information for submission of major funding requests to external agencies. Grants can be used for any purpose except faculty salary. Approximately 6 to 12 applications will be funded in the range of $50,000 to $100,000 each.

The grant application should include:

- A 5-page summary of the proposed use of the funds, including how the proposal fits in with your overall research program and how it addresses novel questions or approaches.

- A list of all currently active grants, including amounts and time period.

- A list of all internal research support received in the past 5 years.

- A list of pending grant applications with dates of submission.

- A list of current graduate students, post docs and technicians with source of funding.

- A copy of your current resume.

At the end of the grant period, a summary of accomplishments and a list of grant applications submitted or planned resulting from this support is required.

2. Graduate Research Student Support: The second program will provide funding for the academic year support for individual graduate research students. These funds are limited to this single purpose and may not be used for other activities. These grants should be used to support GRAs working on material sciences with a focus on synthesis, characterization or use of materials. Preference will be given to those related to nanomaterials. There will be a total of 12 to 15 awards made pending available funds.

The grant application should include:

- A 3-page summary of the proposed project that the RA will work on

- A list of all current grants, amounts and time period

- A list of all internal research support received in the past 5 years

- A list of pending grant applications with dates of submission

- A list of current graduate students, post docs and technicians with source of funding

- A list of all graduate students that have worked in the research group during the last 5 years and any degree earned with date of completion.

- A copy of your current resume

- The name of the proposed RA if known and a short resume

Applications should be submitted electronically to Freda Giblin (fgiblin@med.wayne.edu) in a single PDF file by April 2, 2007.

An internal committee will review the applications and award announcements will be made on or around April 30, 2007.
