Study by Dr. Bengt Arnetz featured in Journal of General Internal Medicine

Physicians are facing increasing pressure as health care systems demand improved efficiency and assess ability, quality and productivity.  The accumulation of stress has taken a toll on physicians. They report decreased job satisfaction and morale which lead to decreased patient-centered care and quality of care. A number of studies report high degree of burn-out and depression among physicians, and the overall result is decreased organizational and physician health and performance.

There is a need to implement and evaluate an evidence-based program to address physician stress.  In a four-year study published in the November issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, Professor Bengt B. Arnetz of the Department of Family Medicine, Division of Occupational and Environmental Health, School of Medicine, and colleagues at Legacy Health System located in Portland, Oregon, evaluated the effects on organizational performance, quality of care, and physician well-being and job satisfaction from an innovative program.

The core of the intervention program was a detailed assessment of organizational and leadership characteristics, physician job satisfaction and work-life balance and physician ratings of patient centeredness and quality of care.  Based on scientific analysis and typical quality enhancement methods, specific changes were initiated.

The four-year study found significant improvement in physcians’ mental energy (the capacity to work), at the same time as emotional and work-related exhaustion decreased. Overall organizational performance improved and physicians became more patient-centered as well.

This pilot project demonstrates an evidence-based approach to improve physician and organizational well-being in time of increasing stress within the health care industry.  To view the full article, visit http://www.springerlink.com/content/0045234564253548/fulltext.html
