Grant Opportunity - Behavioral path to alcohol habit

The NIAAA invites applications for research project grants to investigate alcohol’s effects on the neural underpinnings of learning and memory as they contribute to behavioral characteristics of alcohol dependence, impulsive and or compulsive drinking and relapse. Examples of areas of research range from the interactions among experimentally distinct learning processes and corresponding neural substrates as mechanism of addictive-like alcohol seeking and drinking; the contribution of discrete behavioral, motivational and cognitive processes to various stages of alcohol dependence; and the implicit or automatic cognitive processes operating outside conscious control as they pertain to alcohol dependence.

Deadline:  March 20, 2008

Funds: $2 million for three to five awards of up to $500,000 a year in direct costs for five years.
