New Combination of Drug Therapies Found to Significantly Lower Blood Pressure in Blacks; Dr. John Flack Presented Findings to the National Medical Association

African-Americans have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure, the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease, than other ethnic groups according to the American Heart Association. A research study performed at Wayne State University has found a new combination of drugs, a calcium blocker and an Angiotensin II Receptor blocker (ARB), to have the most significant drop in blood pressure in the first large-scale clinical trial in blacks.

Dr. Csaba Juhasz Studying Potential Method for Improved Brain Tumor Detection

Dr. Csaba Juhasz, assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital of Michigan, recently received a $1.5 million award from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health for a new imaging technique that poses a potentially faster and more accurate method of brain tumor detection.

Dr. Frederic Pearson Hosting Civic Leadership Program for Middle Eastern Students

Wayne State’s Center for Peace and Conflict Studies is hosting the Student Leaders Program, funded by a $278,000 grant from U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). One of six universities chosen for their exceptionally diverse communities and dedication to intercultural education, WSU will provide the venue for 18 of the total 116 international participants.

Dr. Zhe Yang Receives Scientist Development Grant from the National American Heart Association

Zhe Yang, Ph.D., assistant professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the School of Medicine, has been awarded a four-year Scientist Development Grant from the National American Heart Association to further his research of an enzyme that could lead to new treatments to combat arrhythmia and cardiac failure.

5th Annual Research Forum at the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

On September 10, 2008, the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will host its 5th annual Research Forum, Gordon Research Conferences: Paving the Frontiers of Science. The program will begin at 11:00 a.m. at 259 Mack in the lower level auditorium with keynote speaker, Dr. Nancy Ryan Gray, director of the Gordon Research Conferences, West Kingston, RI. The event will conclude with poster presentations from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to all WSU faculty, students and staff.

NIH Grant Proposal Review Opportunity
