Research Mentors Program for New Faculty

The Division of Research's Research Mentors Program for New Faculty strives to encourage a productive mentoring relationship between tenured faculty with strong research records and success in obtaining extramural research funding, and newly recruited junior faculty. This yearlong mentorship is meant to provide guidance to junior faculty in all aspects of research program development, with an emphasis on external grant opportunities that contribute to long-term sustainable research funding for the junior faculty member. Mentoring activities include guidance in establishing an independent research program, critique of manuscripts and grant proposals/applications, development of collaborative research opportunities, and guidance in participation in national activities, such as peer reviews. All tenure-track faculty members who are in their first two years at WSU are eligible to work with a senior faculty mentor as part of this program.
Address nominations for senior mentors in memo format to Denise Figlewicz, Assistant Vice President for Research Enhancement and Development. A brief summary of anticipated mentoring activities, including identification of specific external grant program(s) targeted for a new submission from the junior faculty member, should be included in the memo. The $2,000 award for the mentor will be transferred into the specified Research and Development index (must start with a "2") upon verification of a submitted application for external funding by the junior faculty member within the mentoring year. A copy of the cover page of the submitted proposal should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org upon proposal submission and the Research and Development index number for the $2,000 award transfer should be included in the body of the email.
Memos should be submitted as one PDF through the Cayuse Research Suite. Cayuse is accessible via the Research Resources tab in Academica. A WSU access ID and Academica password is required. To submit your internal funding request, please follow the steps in the Internal Cayuse user guide.
- Sponsor name selected should be "Research Mentor Program for New Faculty - OVPR"
- The MENTOR should be listed as the PI when submitting in Cayuse
- Project title should include mentor and mentee name
- Include program application deadline
- All unit and college approvals must be obtained or request does not reach OVPR
- Indirect costs are never included on internal funding
- The Approving Units sections of the Cayuse must include "VP Research H09050" to correctly route through the system
