Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Hazardous Chemicals

The Wayne State University (WSU) Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) has established this set of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) templates to facilitate the creation and sharing of SOPs within the WSU community.  Principal Investigators (PIs) are responsible for finalizing lab specific SOPs, ensuring their accuracy, and training their staff on the contents.

OEHS maintains this site to enhance campus safety information sharing. This is a service that is continually under development. We will make every effort to keep this site current and to correct errors brought to our attention.

Lab Specific SOP Templates

These templates are designed for PIs to develop SOPs that reflect the safety practices required when working with a specific chemical or a procedure involving hazardous chemicals.  Sections that require laboratory specific information contain grey text with guidance on the type of information that must be added.  Sections with black text contain information that is relevant to the majority of the WSU Campus.  Please read all sections thoroughly when preparing your SOP to ensure that the information presented is accurate for your research location.  Once completed, all relevant staff must be trained on the SOP, and a signed, hard copy maintained in the laboratory. Labs working with particularly hazardous substances or certain high risk chemicals may be required to prepare and submit to the WSU Chemical Safety Committee a protocol and a lab specific SOP for approval before work begins in the lab. The following documents are designed for PI's to educate research personnel on specific high hazard chemicals or groups of chemicals, as classified under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS).  Alternatively, these SOPs can be used for guidance when developing your own lab/chemical specific SOPs using the templates above.  Principal Investigators are responsible for finalizing the SOPs, ensuring their accuracy, and training their staff on the contents.  All relevant staff must be trained on the SOP, and a signed, hard copy maintained in the laboratory.
