Detroit, Michigan, 3/11/21 – Energy Emissions Intelligence (E2i), a Michigan-based cleantech startup, has announced the expanded use of its LEEM technology with the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA). E2i has an exclusive license for the technology, which was developed and launched from Wayne State University’s College of Engineering.

LEEM stands for Locational Emissions Estimation Methodology and is a predictive artificial intelligence (AI) platform that gathers electrical grid information to determine the location-specific carbon intensity of electricity. Using LEEM, GLWA has recorded ongoing emission reductions stemming from its application to targeted operations. Overall reductions in carbon dioxide and mercury have averaged 8% and 26% respectively for the targeted applications.

“We are extremely excited that the technology developed by Dr. Carol Miller and her group has successfully transitioned from a research project in the lab to a real-world application which positively impacts the environment,” said Joan Dunbar, associate vice president, Technology Commercialization at Wayne State University. “This is a great example of the value of the research enterprise at Wayne State University in providing solutions to regional and societal challenges.”

The technology was developed by a Wayne State team that includes Carol Miller, Ph.D., professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and director of WSU’s Healthy Urban Waters; Shawn McElmurry, Ph.D., professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Weisong Shi, Ph.D., the Charles H. Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellow and professor of Computer Science, and associate dean of Research, College of Engineering; and Caisheng Wang, Ph.D., professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering; and numerous Wayne State graduate and post-doctoral students.
