New minimum salary requirements for postdoctoral scholars hires - effective Jan. 1, 2024
Effective January 1, 2024, the minimum salary for a new postdoctoral scholar starting at Wayne State University will be $51,000 per year. For postdoctoral scholars placed on any grant, this salary minimum must be verified in the budget by the college/school grants officer as the grant is developed and must be further verified by the Sponsored Program Administration Office in the Division of Research. All new postdoctoral scholars starting on or after January 1, 2024 and placed on general funds, endowment funds or other university accounts must also meet this minimum threshold. Any current postdoctoral scholar may be paid at their current salary and are eligible for this year's raise process for non-represented employees. Principal investigators and other employers, however, are encouraged to consider raising any existing postdoctoral employees to the new minimum where existing budgets have the flexibility to do so.
This salary amount is competitive with the national average provided to postdoctoral scholars, and thus allows the university to be more competitive in attracting postdocs to Wayne State. This decision has received unanimous support from the Provost's Office, the Graduate School and the Office of the Vice President for Research.
Sincerely,
Mark Kornbluh, Provost and Sr. Vice President for Academic Affairs
and
Timothy Stemmler, Interim Vice President for Research
