Training Grant Support: Data Table Guidance
Overview - Table 4
This table comprehensively illustrates Wayne State University's robust research funding landscape, substantiating the financial capacity of mentors to support trainee research initiatives. By detailing active research grants and funding sources, the table confirms that each potential mentor possesses sufficient financial resources and an active research portfolio to provide meaningful research opportunities and substantive support for future trainees.
Overall Instructions
- List participating faculty in alphabetical order by last name
- List mentors from WSU in Part I and Partner organization(s) in Part II, if applicable. Omit Part II if only WSU mentors are participating
- Only include grant that are relevant to the proposed application where the faculty member is the PD/PI or Project/Core Lead. Exclude:
- Organizational research training grants
- Organizational career development grants
- Research education grants
- Applications pending review
- Administrative/competitive supplements
- Awards in no-cost extension status
- For multi-project grant or cooperative agreements (P-series grants, U54s, etc.), only list information for the component for which the participating faculty member is responsible
- NIH revised Table Four Guidelines in 2020 with a goal of negating overstated annual direct costs for multi-PI, year, and component awards:
- If possible, contact fund managers (unit research admins, DORI RD, SPA Grant & Contract Officer) to obtain current budget period direct costs for each award.
- If this information is not readily available, divide the total current budget period direct cost evenly among all of the award's Multi-PIs and/or Project Leads.
- For multi-component awards, only reports costs associated with the subrecipient(s) for which the faculty member is responsible.
- Correctly calculating totals: Calculate the average direct costs per mentor by dividing the total current budget period direct costs by the total number of mentors listed in Table 1 and represented in Table 2. We recommend finalizing this calculation after confirming the precise number of mentors and verifying current budget period direct costs to accurately account for any potential funding overlaps. Enter the resulting average direct cost per mentor in bold formatting.

Helpful Hints
Maximize Research Funding
Participating faculty must demonstrate robust, active research portfolios capable of substantively supporting trainee research endeavors. We recommend strategically curating a faculty group with strong, ongoing grant funding. The goal is to minimize the presence of faculty without current research support and optimize the Average Grant Support per Participating Faculty Member. If the average grant support appears insufficient, carefully reassess the faculty composition. Seek to enhance the group's collective funding strength while maintaining a team that brings diverse and meaningful expertise to the training program.
- The selection process should prioritize:
- Consistent and substantial research funding
- Potential for meaningful trainee mentorship
- Diverse research perspectives and capabilities
- Strategic alignment with program training objectives
- If two participating faculty Principal Investigators report the same grant but with marginally different total amounts, proactively reach out to their respective fund managers to obtain precise current budget period direct costs. These variations can arise from factors such as research supplements or administrative nuances. Prioritize obtaining the most accurate and granular financial information to ensure a precise calculation of average grant support.
