ARPA-E Announces OPEN Call at May 2024 Summit
Every three years, ARPA-E releases an OPEN funding solicitation to advance transformative energy breakthroughs in critical areas that fall outside the scope of its technology-focused programs.  The Vision OPEN 2024 includes three goals that are critical to achieve a sustainable energy and carbon transition with:

  1. Greenhouse gas (GHG)-free abundant primary energy;
  1. An intermodal energy superhighway that transports diversified forms of primary energy; and
  1. A carbon transition that sustainably meets demand for polymers and other materials.

The plan is to allocate $150 million to fund up to 70 projects.  ARPA-E anticipates making 30-50 awards under the FOA.  Individual awards may vary between $250,000 and $10 million.  Concept paper submission deadline is 9:30 AM ET on July 16, 2024

DOD Releases Global Water Security Program NOFO
The Department of Defense (DOD) released a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for its Global Water Security (GWS) Program, which will work to provide data and analysis on how seasonal to decadal weather can impact security and training operations.  The program responds to commitments laid out in the 2022-2027 US Global Water Strategy.  Awardees will specifically focus on the implications of water availability and extreme weather events on food and energy security.  They will also house and analyze data to monitor and provide feedback on strategic and tactical efforts for DOD and other interagency groups.  Proposals should align with the following technical priorities:

  1. “Fully develop and validate the “Pathways to Impacts” framework;
  1. Support of strategic and operational planning;
  1. Support of allies and partners and defense diplomacy;
  1. Support outside of the continental U.S. (OCONUS) installation resilience and adaption planning;
  1. Support of intergovernmental water security efforts; and
  1. Support climate literacy and education.”

Only institutions of higher education are eligible to apply.  DOD will fund at least one cooperative agreement for a five-year performance period.  The total amount awarded for fiscal year (FY) 2024 is will be no more than $9.6 million, and no more than $2 million for FY 2025.  Applications are due June 18, 2024, and successful applicants will be contacted by DOD by August 1, 2024.

CDMRP Releases FY 2024 Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program Solicitations
The Department of Defense (DOD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) released its fiscal year (FY) 2024 Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) solicitations.  For FY 2024, Congress allocated $130 million to the PRCRP in 19 topic areas.  The PRCRP aims to support innovative, high-impact cancer research that leads to clear and impactful advances in the health care of service members and their families, veterans, and beneficiaries.  Applications to the FY 2024 PRCRP must address at least one of the FY 2024 PRCRP topic areas.  Applications should address gaps in cancer research that may affect military readiness or environmental/exposure risk factors associated with cancer.  These environmental and/or occupational risk factors should be relevant to activities specific to the military, such as deployments that may cause exposure to potential carcinogens.  More details on each of the FY 2024 PRCRP funding mechanisms can be found in Lewis-Burke’s analysis
