Updates to Anesthesia Monitoring Guideline for Rodents

Recently, the IACUC updated the guideline on Anesthetic Care and Monitoring of Rodents. This guideline reminds investigators and research staff that while animals are anesthetized, they must not be left unattended and must be continuously monitored.  During initial recovery (i.e., following surgery), you must remain in the room and monitor and evaluate animals at least every 10 minutes. An appropriate heat source should be applied underneath half of the cage and animals should be recovered singly.  Only once the animal has regained normal ambulation and begins grooming behaviors, can it be returned to normal housing.

The revised guideline and all IACUC policies and guidelines can be found on the IACUC website here or by contacting the IACUC Office (IACUC@wayne.edu).
