Updates to space recommendations affecting rat cages

Recent evaluations of the size of our rat cages against the minimum space standards of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide) has resulted in an update to our Space Recommendations policy

Rat microisolator (143in2) and rat ventilated (140in2) cages can only hold a maximum of four (4) adult rats weighing less than 300g. This is a decrease from the previous policy, which stated a maximum of five (5) rats. Additionally, rat microisolator (143in2) and rat ventilated (140in2) cages can only hold one adult plus a litter (e.g., a mother and pups) as opposed to two (2) adults plus a litter (e.g., a male plus a mother and pups).

These changes are compliant with the standards and regulations of the Guide and other universities across the country.  Deviations from this policy must be included in the protocol or submitted as an amendment and require IACUC approval. If you have any questions, please contact the IACUC Office (IACUC@wayne.edu).
