Purchasing Radioactive Materials

The purchasing of radioactive material at Wayne State University is coordinated by the Purchasing Department and the Office of Environmental Health & Safety.

Only an approved Principal Investigator (PI) may order radioactive material. For obtaining approval, please visit the online eProtocol system.

The procedure for ordering radioactive material is as follows:

  • The PI or designee shall call the Purchasing Department at 313-577-3734 and talk to a Buyer who handles radioactive material.
  • The PI or designee shall supply the following information to the Buyer;
    • The Principal Investigator's name
    • The Department
    • The Controlled Facility (laboratory that has been approved and posted by OEHS) where radioactive material will be used.
    • The Isotope
    • The amount of the Isotope
    • The Vendor's name

The Buyer will contact OEHS for approval. If the information given matches the computer database for the PI, then OEHS will approve the order.

Online WayneBuy system can be used for purchasing through a regular requisition. The account code must be indicated as 721H6 for radioactive materials. This code will help to route the purchase to OEHS for approval of your order.

A Purchasing Order (PO) number will be given to OEHS for inventory purposes and also given to the PI. The PI may then call the Vendor to place the order with the PO number.

NO LIMITED PURCHASE ORDERS (LPO) SHALL BE USED FOR THE PURCHASES OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS.

STANDING ORDERS:

Standing Orders are for a specific amount of radioactive material over a specified period of time. Standing Orders may be requested by a PI. Approval will only be given by the Office of Environmental Health & Safety.
